Hong Kong Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Sun Life International Dragon Boat Races with Spectacular Waterfront Festival

Celebrate Hong Kong’s 50th Sun Life International Dragon Boat Races with world-class competition, cultural workshops, gourmet food, and waterfront entertainment. The festival unites tradition, sports, and modern experiences across Victoria Harbour and citywide.

Hong Kong is set to host one of its most iconic summer traditions as the Sun Life Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races return to Victoria Harbour this June, marking a landmark 50th anniversary. The event, organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, promises world-class racing, live entertainment, cultural experiences, and a gourmet carnival along the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront.

Running from 19 June to 1 July, the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival will feature a 13-day program encompassing traditional culture, interactive workshops, and performances. The Sun Life Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races, scheduled for 27-28 June, will attract over 220 elite teams from 16 countries and regions, highlighting Hong Kong’s status as the Events Capital of Asia.

Originating from local fishing community rituals intended to dispel misfortune and pray for safety, dragon boat racing in Hong Kong evolved into a competitive sport with international recognition. The city hosted its first international race in 1976 at Shau Kei Wan Typhoon Shelter with just ten teams, marking the beginning of modern dragon boat racing. Today, the event has grown into a global phenomenon and a recognized sport in the Asian Games.

Beyond the racing, the festival transforms Tsim Sha Tsui into a vibrant cultural hub. The Avenue of Stars and Salisbury Garden will host immersive experiences, from intangible cultural heritage workshops to modern attractions such as a virtual reality dragon boat paddling game, live music, and stage performances. The festival emphasizes hands-on sessions celebrating traditional crafts while providing a modern harbourfront carnival atmosphere.

The festival extends beyond Victoria Harbour. In Tai O, the Dragon Boat Water Parade continues a centuries-old ritual in which sacred sampans carrying deity statues traverse the village waterways, recognized as part of China’s national intangible cultural heritage in 2011. Local dragon boat races will also take place across Hong Kong in Stanley, Aberdeen, Sai Kung, and Shing Mun River in Sha Tin, each offering unique community atmospheres and inviting visitors to explore Hong Kong’s cultural diversity.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board, a government-subvented organization, oversees promotion of the city as a premier travel destination and ensures high-quality visitor experiences. Through the festival, the board continues to highlight Hong Kong’s distinctive “east-meets-west” identity, blending centuries-old traditions with contemporary urban energy.

The 50th anniversary of the Sun Life Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races demonstrates the city’s commitment to preserving heritage while celebrating international sportsmanship, cultural exchange, and a dynamic festival experience for residents and visitors alike.
